Chapter Ten

I used to wonder what type of monster Sicily could have turned into if she’d been in Windy Ridge when the mysterious crimson fog had rolled through.

I thought of all the possibilities as she shuffled into the diner carrying a stack of books that reached clear up to her chin. She huffed and sweated her way toward me, resisting the urge to ask for help. Exactly like me!

Stubborn. Willful. Assertive. Boseman women had always been that way. And now, as she stacked the books on the table where I sat counting the till, I wondered again what kind of mythical being would have reformed her DNA? Would she have become one of those super-intelligent creatures? Maybe a fox or a horse? Or would she have turned into a mythical witch or a siren?

The books clattered on the table, rattling the till and tinkling the change inside the drawer. I stared at the bindings—most of them, thankfully, were in English.

“Here, look at this,” Sicily announced, short of breath. She plopped a book in front of me, opened it, and pointed to an old photograph. “I’m almost sure this is what’s hunting and killing everything in the woods.”

“How can you be sure?”

She held her stomach and wheezed. During her obsessive research binges, she often got so involved, she forgot to eat or drink, and I was fairly sure that’s exactly what had happened here.

Sweeping the books aside, save for the one she’d set in front of me, I urged her to sit down. Then I prepared some leftovers—a chicken pot pie and a tall glass of root beer—which I served her as she settled into the booth. She watched me pour a bloody cocktail for myself. This time, I omitted the moonshine. Didn’t do much for me, anyway.

I’d barely eaten all night, too. I was too busy trying to figure out how, if anything, a ballcap fitted in with the rash of violent animal attacks we’d suffered of late.

Sipping my cocktail, I focused on the photo in front of me. “So, what’s this thing called?”

It didn’t look pretty. Most creatures weren’t particularly appealing around here, but I didn’t dare say that out loud. Folks had a hard enough time seeing themselves in the mirror. I wasn’t about to rub more salt into the wounds, but she-ya, some of our folks were just downright hideous.

“That’s a redcap,” she replied between bites of her pot pie. “It’s kinda like a goblin.”

My mouth scrunched up as I studied the photograph in the book. “You’re telling me! It’s icky.”

“There have been plenty of mutant variations in the goblin species throughout history,” she continued, educating me as she was likely to do.

“None of them look as malevolent as that, though.”

She nodded as she indicated the top of the creature’s head that looked a lot like a goblin’s. And then some! The short, wrinkled creature had skinny fingers, long talons, and large red eyes. On its head was a stocking cap dyed red. Hence, the name, redcap.

“They’re also called ‘powries’, ‘red combs’, and ‘bloody caps’,” she explained.
